If you give a mouse a Twinkie…

…it won’t eat it… At least not the health conscious mouse that spent time in our RV while we were gone. It wandered around a bit but only nibbled on a couple of apples and the branches of a pussy willow I had in a vase, that’s it. It even left its nibblings in a nice, little, easy to clean pile. It didn’t bother Dizzy’s treats or anything in our snack basket, not even the chocolate-creme-filled Twinkies (yes, they’re real and yes, they’re yummy!). We know it crawled through the snack basket but not a single nibble on anything. Interesting…I’ve had mouse problems in the past (I’ve even had them as pets) and I’ve never seen a mouse turn down a good, sugary snack, hmm. We think it’s the same mouse that’s been leaving maple seeds on the top of my car engine, since my car wasn’t there it had to find another warm place to go.

Our vacation was great! We had a good time, as always, down in Winchester Bay and we’ll be going back there in a couple of weeks for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Coast Guard will be turning the maintenance of the Umpqua River  Lighthouse over to Douglas County.  That’s a pretty big deal! The community went to a great deal of effort to keep the Lighthouse open (the government wanted to shut it down and remove the lens–BOO). The ceremony is open to the public and in attendance will be Congressman Peter DeFazio, of Oregon, and Coast Guard Commander Daryl Peloquin. Dave will be the lucky one the give them a private tour! Neat!

While we were down there we took my car in to Les Schwab to have my tires rotated, nothing unusual, but, I failed to do my usual walk around to check the hub caps, no one ever puts them on right…not even the pros. I ALWAYS check! But, not yesterday…we had plans to meet a friend for dinner and got excited and just got in the car and left. We took Hwy 101 home today and stopped to see a couple more friends in the Florence area and we stopped again in Depoe Bay (world’s smallest harbor and primo whale watching place) for a potty break and noticed that my right rear hub cap was missing! Not cool! I’m pretty meticulous about my car and about everything being where it should be, so a missing hub cap is just not acceptable…we took the other 3 off so it wouldn’t be noticeable… Now, you just see black, dirty wheels. So, somewhere between Carl G Washburne State Park and Depoe Bay is my hub cap… We actually think we know where it might have rolled off, there’s a certain stretch of road that is just awful and the pavement is always torn up (and it was all repaved last summer). You can swerve to avoid one pothole only to fall into another one. Well, I guess this is another reason to put some nice rims on my car.

Anyway, our great weekend ended with the annoyance of a missing hub cap and the invasion of a health conscious mouse. And tomorrow we have to get up early to pack up the RV and trailer, hook the two together and move up the road a bit into the campground where we’ll be parked for the last 2 weeks here. It’s also another big laundry day. Our little mouse friend has also been into the storage compartments crawling on(and messing on and trying to nest in) our sleeping bags and all of the camping blankets, nice. Oh well, clean it up and move on and look forward to some dry weather in the months to come so we can air everything out.
